At the beginning of the 20th century, the merging of three businessmen who operated quarries since 1885 in Vermont , Mr James Boutwell, Georges B. Milne and Harvey W. Varum, marked the birth of a new company. In 1914, it officially took the name of Rock of Ages. The implementation of a logo and a perpetual warranty for each monument followed.
With the creation of a new logo and warranty, the company launched a nationwide advertising campaign to distinguish itself from other competitors that used granite from the same region. When a customer purchased a Rock of Ages product, he was guaranteed a monument without defects. He was also assured that if any of the granite portions should prove defective in any way, the monument would be replaced without charge under the Rock of Ages Sealmark® warranty.
In 1940 and 1955 Rock of Ages buys two other large well-known quarries and builds a new modern plant to manufacture monuments and construction products. In 1955 the company seeks the services of famous painter Normand Rockwell to help in its nationwide advertising campaign.
In 1957 the purchase of the Bethel White quarry launched the company into the architectural world at the International level.
In 1958 the company acquired Brodie Limited in Iberville , Quebec to secure the supply of the Laurentian Pink granite which had become very popular in Canada and in the United States .
In 1963 there was the purchase of the grey granite quarry from Stanstead Granite Company in Quebec to consolidate with Brodie Holdings and in 1964 took the name of Fairmont Granite Ltd and transferred all its manufacturing activities to Beebe. The name of the Canadian operation was changed to Rock of Ages Canada Ltd. in 1984.
Today in Canada , Rock of Ages Canada owns two factories and two quarries. The United States Division has one main manufacturing plant, many quarries of different colors and a chain of retail stores in the eastern part of the country.
